1. Council Decision 2001/51/EC of 20 December 2000 establishing a Programme relating to the Community framework strategy on gender equality (2001-2005) [2] was included in Protocol 31 to the Agreement by Decision of the EEA Joint Committee No 88/2001 of 19 June 2001 [3].
2. It is appropriate to extend the cooperation of the Contracting Parties to the Agreement to include Decision No 1554/2005/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 2005 amending Council Decision 2001/51/EC establishing a programme relating to the Community framework strategy on gender equality and Decision No 848/2004/EC establishing a Community action programme to promote organisations active at European level in the field of equality between men and women [4].
3. This programme covers a wide geographic area owing to the fact that the new Treaty of Accession was signed on 16 April 2003 and that the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) provides for increased cooperation in the field of gender equality between the European Community and its Member States, on the one hand, and the countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), on the other.
